6 Important Steps to Disinfect Your Desk

As many businesses reopen and people go back to work during the coronavirus pandemic, it is critical to disinfect your workspace regularly.

You can do your part to prevent the spread of coronavirus by following these practices in your workplace:

1. Clean Your Computer Keyboard

2016 UK study found that your keyboard is 20,000 times dirtier than a toilet seat. Custodial staff may regularly clean toilets, but your keyboard is your responsibility. Unplug your keyboard from the computer and use a can of compressed air to blow dust out from in between the keys. You can also clean in between the keys with cotton swabs and a cleaning solution. Then be sure to finish off by wiping down the other surfaces with cleaning solution and a lint-free cloth.

2. Disinfect Your Phones

Like your keyboard, your phone carries many germs from your mouth, hands, ears, and face– including both your desk phone and cell phone. It’s a good idea to sanitize your phones a few times a day. Use a cloth and cleaning solution to wipe down the phones and any Bluetooth devices you use.

3. Wash Your Water Bottle

If you carry a water bottle to stay up on daily water intake and reduce waste from using disposable bottles, good for you! However, you also want to stay healthy by keeping your water bottle clean. Bring your bottle home daily and wash it with dish detergent and warm water.

4. Keep Your Writing Utensils Clean and For Your Use Only

You touch your writing utensils a lot throughout a given day, and they can present a risk of spreading the virus– especially if shared between people. We recommend throwing out your current collection of writing utensils, buying a new pack that you keep only to use yourself. Keep them stored away in a clean place.

5. Snack Cleanup

Crumbs can attract bacteria or critters that can bring even more bacteria. Keep snacks sealed away in airtight containers. Don’t share snacks unless packaged individually.

6. Clean the Desktop

The last step to ensuring your workplace is clean is to disinfect your desk. Remove papers and any other clutter from your desk, use disinfectant wipes to clean the entire surface, and wipe the nooks and crannies.
